Are you financially prepared for a wildfire? If you are a homeowner, your home is likely your most valuable asset. Whether you are a renter or homeowner, your personal possessions would likely cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace. If you do not have home or renters insurance, those assets are at risk. Insurance acts as your financial safety net and is crucial for rebuilding after a wildfire.

If you already have insurance, review your coverage with an insurance company or agent to make sure you have the protection you need. If you do not have insurance, shop around to explore your options. Visit https://dfr.oregon.gov/insure/home/storm/Pages/wildfires.aspx.

Wildfire season is here – are you prepared? Create defensible space and take steps to protect your home from wildfire.

  1. Clear tree needles, leaves, and other debris from roofs, gutters, porches, and decks.
  2. Remove vegetation from under trees and prune trees up to 10 feet from the ground.
  3. Trees should be spaced 10 feet from the house and other trees so that canopies are at least 15 feet apart.
  4. Keep firewood piles at least 30 feet away from buildings.
  5. Keep your lawn and plants trimmed and well-watered.
  6. Install 1/8-inch metal mesh screening in attic and crawl space vents to prevent wildfire from entering the home.
  7. Create a noncombustible area at least 5 feet wide around the perimeter of your home. Remove flammable plants and do not use wood mulches.

Save time, money, and stress when disaster strikes by completing these tasks:

  1. Review your insurance policies with your agent or company to ensure you are adequately protected. Many homeowners are unknowingly underinsured.
  2. Build a home inventory. Take a video of the personal property in each room of your home and describe the items as you record. You can also use a home inventory app or a home inventory tool provided by your insurance company.
  3. Gather copies of important documents such as titles, insurance policies, tax records, birth and marriage certificates, and Social Security cards. Store them in a password-protected cloud or with your emergency kit.
  4. Make a list of account numbers and customer service contact information for insurance companies, banks, lenders, utilities, and landlords.
  5. Set aside enough cash to get you and your family through the first several days after an emergency.

Have you been evacuated due to wildfire? Insurance companies may pay for additional living expenses, including hotel stays, restaurant meals, pet boarding, and more because of fire evacuation. Check with your insurance company to confirm your specific coverage and deductible. Keep all receipts and call your insurance company or agent as soon as it is safe to do so to let them know you were evacuated. Consider whether the loss is extensive enough to file a claim. A reported claim could affect your future premium or ability to obtain coverage.

The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation has a dedicated team of consumer advocates who can help answer any questions that homeowners and renters might have about their insurance coverage or the claims process. Call 888-877-4894 (toll-free). Visit https://dfr.oregon.gov/help/Pages/index.aspx.
